‘This year,’ Mrs Paul stated, ‘we must ensure that no vulgar incidents are allowed to mar the event.’

Nearly all of those assembled around the table responded with nods of agreement, some earnest, some timid. Only old Mr Kidd failed to react, and he appeared to be half asleep. Satisfied that she had the submission, if not necessarily the support, of an effective majority of the parish council, Mrs Paul continued.

‘If we are to have a performance it must be of a wholesome nature, and definitely nothing like those dreadful cheerleaders.’

Old Mr Kidd looked up, as if suddenly coming awake.

‘I rather liked the cheerleaders. Very colourful, I thought.’

Mrs Paul gave him a look that would have reduced either of her ex-husbands to apologetic babbling, but he seemed to have returned to his reverie. The vicar adjusted his spectacles before making a cautious suggestion.

‘A Miss Bronwen Morgan has offered to perform a vernal dance entitled “Frolic in Green”, in company with her troop, and at no charge so long as she is able to set out a stall promoting her services and selling a variety of associated products, pressed flowers, incense candles, herbal remedies and so forth, I believe. Are we in favour?’

Mrs Paul hesitated, reluctant to give her approval. Miss Morgan sounded altogether too unconventional for her taste, and a yet a floral dance was an immeasurable improvement on having a line of buxom girls in multi-coloured uniforms parading their underwear for all to see. She voiced a question.

‘I take it her performance is suitable?’

The vicar seemed surprised.

‘I imagine so. Apparently she is an expert in interpretive dance and the language of flowers.’

‘How charming,’ Mrs Chapel remarked. ‘I used to have a book called The Language of Flowers when I was a little girl.’

Old Mr Kidd looked up once more.

‘Ah, yes, as I recall a yellow rose stands for faithless love. Yes, I…’

He trailed off, his eyes no longer focussed, his mouth curved into a faint smile, as if at some bittersweet memory. Mrs Paul gave an irritable click of her tongue before she went on.

‘Very well then, with the Morris Men and the parade that should be enough in the way of entertainment. Vicar?’

The vicar once more adjusted his spectacles.

‘Yes, thank you, Mrs Paul. And so to item five on the agenda…’
